Since his triumphant late-2016 return to the production arena (following a 5-year hiatus), Approaching Black has released several standout EPs on our label, all of which evince a seasoned maestro at the height of his compositional powers. His latest release, the deep-flavored "Alone Again," is another wonderful addition to the Australian veteran's elegant oeuvre.
The title cut begins with a chilled groove and a sensual, late-night ambience, thanks to a variety of soothing and romantic melodic themes, not the least of which is a recurring 'alone again' vocal teaser. Near the song's midpoint, a poignant full verse delicately emerges, followed by a full-bodied bassline. Just as the listener begins to anticipate a more aggressive conclusion to the arrangement, the song once again sinks into deep-progressive bliss.
The atmosphere of the B-side cut, "At Just The Right Time," is contemplative, if not mystical. Distant vocal echoes and lyrical stabs decorate the evocative soundscape, while a super chilled deep house groove evokes a floating-on-air sensation. A gorgeous piano and string solo, backed by a chorus of crickets, highlights this breathtaking piece.
