Over the last few years, Irish phenom Jay FM has been treating listeners to deep-progressive gems that are equal parts cerebral and emotive. Recently he presented "Follow Your Dreams," a lucid and profound aural journey, on our label. His latest release, "Obsession," continues to solidify his legacy as one of the great deep-progressive house composers of his generation.
The title cut, featured on our recent "Only Silk 05" compilation, begins with a gentle crescendo, centering on a subtle bassline, crisp shakers, and a foreboding melodic motif. The combination enthralls the listener with its mysterious pull, leading into an organic melody. Minute arpeggios arrive midway through the progression, when the moody soundscape reaches its emotional peak. The listener's deep reverie is imbued with feelings of yearning, thereby reinforcing the provocative song title.
Also featured on "Only Silk 05," the majestic "Running" is a more uptempo and ebullient affair than the more pensive "Obsession." A subtle bassline carries the listener through a variety of resplendent sonic layers, the most striking of which are lush, sensual vocals. Vibrant, trance-influenced chords cascade into the arrangement in the main breakdown, slowing momentarily to usher in more melancholic piano keys. Each of these elements coalesce in the track's climax, causing us to ponder whether we're running from or towards our destiny.
Closing out the EP, "Choices" proffers myriad cosmic textures, which unfurl before the listener like an ornate tapestry. Amongst the beautiful threads that hold it together are introspective piano themes and sharp percussion. Gradually a steady beat builds into a mellow sway. "Choices" reveals itself as a long corridor through which we can access infinite possibilities in life.
